NEW ASTM C-330 STRUCTURAL MATERIAL AVAILABLE IN TEXAS
HOUSTON, July 24, 2007 - Texas Industries (TXI), the largest producer and distributor of rotary-kiln expanded shale and clay (ES&C) in the western United States, has introduced 3/8 structural lightweight aggregate in the Texas market. The ASTM C-330-approved material has been successfully used in pre-cast concrete applications and is currently being used on several projects in the South Texas Region, including a 20-story office tower.
The 3/8 structural material is being manufactured and distributed from TXI's North Texas facility. It is also currently being shipped to TXI's Clodine distribution facility, a former production plant located west of Houston, for the South Texas market. The Company also announced plans recently to provide three new transportation terminals in Texas for distribution of structural lightweight aggregates and other TXI Expanded Shale Products.
"Historically, TXI has served the South Texas market with an expanded clay material from our Clodine facility and will now serve this market with an expanded shale product from our other Texas facility. Both materials are ASTM approved," said John Hoyt, Regional Sales Manager for TXI Expanded Shale & Clay. "TXI is committed to meeting product demand from structural engineers and ready-mix producers throughout Texas by continuing to provide quality service and delivery for the C-330-approved product."
In May 2007, the company ceased production of expanded clay at the 42-year-old Clodine facility and, after Clodine's structural aggregate inventory was depleted, began shipping structural aggregates from North Texas to Clodine to meet South Texas demand. Due to robust economic growth in the West Houston real estate market, the Clodine facility was sold for future residential development. Clodine will remain a distribution center until year-end when the new TXI distribution terminals are expected to become operational.
Regardless of plant location, all TXI Structural Lightweight Aggregate meets the ASTM C-330 standards. The Company's North Texas facility has a large inventory of structural aggregate and has increased capacity to meet current demand for all of Texas.
TXI is the largest producer of cement in Texas and a major cement producer in California. TXI is also a major supplier of construction aggregates, ready-mix concrete and concrete products. TXI shares are traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "TXI". For more information about TXI and the ES&C division, visit www.txi.com.
