In 2007, Steiner Ranch in Travis County, Texas, installed approximately 70 cubic yards of Pave Grow pedestrian mix, at a depth of six inches, around the pool area of its Bella Mar Amenity Center. The material makes an excellent growing medium for sod and other landscape vegetation.
Additionally, some 90 cubic yards of Pave Grow vehicular mix was placed in the overflow parking area for the amenity center. The material was placed at a six-inch depth with no geo-grid or base rock required, due to a sub-grade of limestone rock typical in the Texas Hill Country. The contractor allowed the site to rest for five months before opening the parking area to wheeled traffic. This waiting period gave the sod’s root system time to establish and knit together, thus providing added structural strength to the Pave Grow parking area.
The difference between the pedestrian and vehicular mixes is the gradation of the expanded shale. A coarser gradation, or larger size aggregate, is used in the vehicular blend to bridge the weight of the vehicle, so that the root system will not be crushed by the weight of the vehicle. Both mixes contain TXI expanded shale and TXI Owen chocolate loam.
